Somatic Experiencing

Dr. Peter A. Levine is the founder of Somatic Experiencing®. Dr. Levine’s extensive background in stress and trauma helped shape his discovery of Somatic Experiencing®, which is a form of trauma resolution that focuses specifically on psychobiology, or the biological foundation of our behavior, emotions, and thoughts.

During trauma, our biological “fight or flight” response is triggered. Biologically, both animals and humans are equipped to regulate this response. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) helps relieve the energy used in this response. However, other factors may interfere with an individual’s biological attempts to regulate their system.

During Somatic Experiencing®, a trained psychotherapist will help you identify triggers within your body, paying attention to how your body reacts. The ultimate goal of SE® is to use sensory awareness to re-regulate your body’s biological responses to trauma. More details can be found on the Somatic Experience Trauma Institute’s webpage.
